Happy International Women’s Day!

Happy International Women’s Day!

It’s here. The day I’ve been waiting for, although every day is Women’s Day in my line of work. Working with and on behalf of women is as natural to me as breathing. I strive to tell the truths that must be told, and to work with partners to shine a light on the fact that women leaders are far more capable than the current state of equality suggests. Everything I do, including #MoreThan, is about celebrating the value in each of us and the power in all of us. Today I’m personally having several mini celebrations, and I’d like to share them with you.

1. Freedom.

I’m celebrating the freedom that comes with growing older. As the years go by, I care less about looking good and more about being good. I realize that my persona is not as important as the person I am becoming day by day. And, giving takes up more of my time, energy, and focus than ever before. It’s indeed liberating, because I know that as long I’m giving back, I’m moving forward. It’s the best kind of cycle to find yourself in.

2. Sisterhood.

I have phenomenal relationships with the women in my life and I am so grateful. I didn’t grow up with sisters, but I was gifted with many at Spelman College, many more at Hallmark where I worked for over 20 years, and yet more on my entrepreneurial journey and in the Executive Leadership Council. Sisterhood is the source of my sanity and the fuel to my fire. My mission has been shaped by the women who’ve loved me. Starting with my mother, and ending never, I hope!

3. Family.

I am a happy wife and mom to six children, ages 12 to 21. Our children are all creative in their own ways. Our oldest (a daughter) is a dancer. Our 18-year-old daughter is an illustrator. Our 16-year-old son is an aspiring rapper. Our other 16-year-old son is an aspiring theater actor and model. Our 13-year-old son wants to build his own apparel company. And our 12-year-old son, while young, is always making things – slime, art, writing. As a creative person myself, it fills me with such pride and joy to watch them express themselves in these ways. Today, I’m overwhelmed with pride in our oldest son, who wrote and performed the song “The Love We Need” in honor of International Women’s Day. It’s a thoughtful, uplifting anthem encouraging us to honor and love the women in our lives, and the fact that it was written and is performed by a 16-year-old boy is icing on the cake.

Here’s the song – 2 minutes of happy on this International Women’s Day.

I hope it makes you smile. And I hope it serves as a reminder that you, too, have a role to play in gender equality.

We are The Love We Need.
